Moved many boxes down to the basement from the living room (not all of them, though) and if anything, the living room looks like more of a disaster than before. Though it *is* easier to get to the thermostat without tripping over things now...

This is my first post, and first bento!!

I made it for my 2 year old son, and filled it with some of his favorite things!

~Applesauce
~Peanut butter and jelly sandwich cut into duckies
~Gerber Strawberry yogurt bites

Just something simple, as I've never really done it before, and he's an extremely picky eater! He brought it to daycare with him, and the woman that runs it nearly DIED from cute! ^_^

Pork Guisantes and a New Job! [Dec. 29th, 2009|02:14 pm]

I've been using my Ms. Bento a lot because lately I don't get a lunch break at work (call the police!!!)  I'm in love that I can open up my hot lunch at my desk instead of eating a room temperature sandwich.

Love it, Love it!

Fortunately, I got a new job!!!  I start on Monday and boy, am I thrilled!  I will miss my old company and my old co-workers dearly, but I think it is time I moved on.  There is stability in my future.

Besides the awesomity of a hot lunch with no time for the microwave...

How many of you like Filipino food?  I tried making my own pork guisantes (what? i don't need to buy it?!) and it turned out wonderful.

I got the recipe from www.foodnetwork.com:

Pork Guisantes (Filipino Pork and Peas):
Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 lb lean pork, sliced in small pieces
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp patis
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 oz. tomato paste
  • 1 pkg (6 oz) frozen peas
  • 1 can (3-4 oz) pimientos, sliced
  • Salt to taste

Directions

Heat oil in large skillet. Saute garlic, onions and pork until browned. Add soy sauce, patis, water and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until pork is tender, about 5-7 minutes. Add tomato paste, peas and pimientos. Simmer for 5 more minutes. Salt to taste.

I didn't know it was so easy. My Mom would be so proud!  Here are the left overs in my bento:

Rice; pork guisantes; cucumber, fried eggplant, orange bell peppers, pickled cucumbers.

Congratulations to me for my new job and my new ability to cook Filipino food!

Smart Bento [Dec. 27th, 2009|06:28 pm]

[Bunny is | curious]

Hi, everyone!

I got a red Smart Bento for Christmas! I'm very excited about using it for the first time, and I was wondering if anyone on this comm has one. Its dimensions are quite narrow, so I'd be interested in seeing how people pack them.

But my main question is this: Are they microwave-friendly? The instructions that came with it are in Japanese, but there's a drawing of what looks like a microwave with a big X through it. I am not sure whether that means the whole thing is not microwavable, or just the lids, or what. I know that most bentos are microwavable without the lids, but I'd like to hear from someone who actually owns one of these particular boxes.

Thanks!

From the Exact Middle of Nowhere [Dec. 26th, 2009|09:14 pm]

Waving from the Middle of Nowhere, where there's no TV, my cell phone doesn't work and the internet is slow and klunky enough that semaphore might be more efficient.

Statuesque aired last night on Sky 1. I didn't see it. Didn't get to see the first part of the last David Tennant Doctor Who either. (Statuesque is currently available on Sky Anytime, for UK Sky subscribers, until the 31st of Dec. Look it up under the title of "Ten Mintue Tales") (Yes, Mintue. I know they mean Minute, but that's what it's up as right now.)

On the other hand, we got a few hour's sunlight today. I saw some of that. And yesterday we went for a walk and, using map coordinates and the GPS Mike's amazing new Google Cell Phone (aka Dogfood) we found a Viking stone circle. And I'm cooking a lot on the Aga. My favourite present was one my children had clubbed together to get me: a painting of my dog, by artist Kelli Bickman. They know I love Kelli's stuff, and figured that I would be made happy by a painting of Cabal by her. And I am, very happy indeed.

Anyway. I hope you had a very happy Boxing Day, and that all your boxes belong to you.

The whine returns [Dec. 26th, 2009|03:21 pm]

[Bunny is | frustrated]

Okay, I've exceeded my "just shut up and deal" vs "whine" threshold again, so I'm whining on livejournal. I feel so high school again or something?

So yeah, the "and then I got sick" from the last entry? Well, my feeling better was temporary. It lasted about a week. Then I was sick in the same way for about another week. Last week I felt better again. Guess what? Yesterday, the chills and ick feeling and everything were back, along with gastrointestinal issues that have accompanied this thing each time.

Hopefully this bout is shorter. Also, I have an appointment with a gastroentrologist (as a kind of starting guess as to what system might be going wrong) this Wednesday, and I am really strongly hoping that the new doctor has some idea. If not gastroentrology, I really don't have much clue as to what specialist to go to. Endocrinology? WTFology?

That said, until this stuff gets better, please don't be offended if I randomly cancel plans to hang out or whatever. I'm trying to have as much of my life as I can, but I feel like I can't really truly commit to much right now, given "oh my body might randomly decide that I can't do much for a week."

In the mean time, I've just spent like three hours napping, and I got nine hours of sleep last night. I'm glad it is a weekend, I'm covering a customer account at work this week, so I don't want to be randomly unavailable.

Still not Dead. [Dec. 26th, 2009|10:21 am]

I was accepted for admission into Humboldt State University (provisionally obviously, but it looks as though I'll be able to make admission requirements. If not... At least I'll be extra ready next year?

Our second (and last) dog seems to be dying of leukemia. It would be costly and painful to have the confirming test done, and treatment would be so costly we couldn't afford it anyway. So we're just trying to make her comfortable - and the vet is giving her antibiotics in case it's an infection instead.

Hey All,
We were discussing this in the comments of a post a while back, but I can't find it for the life of me.

Does anyone know where and in which text it's discussed that a Jewish man can marry a non-Jewish woman if he captures her in battle? I feel like someone posted a link to the passage (in the Talmud?) but I can't remember and I'm driving myself crazy trying to find it.

Thanks!

The lack of bento updates [Dec. 24th, 2009|11:42 am]

Wow it's been a long time since I last updated. Sorry for having disappeared for a while. I still read the updates in here but have not been posting or commenting much. As I have recently mentioned on my food blog, I pretty much went 'off' food for the past few months while dealing with morning (read: all-day-and-night) sickness and the exhaustion typical of early pregnancy. I did very little cooking and not many bento lunches were packed. Even when I did pack lunches, they were not very inspired and I did not bother taking any photos. I am feeling much better now halfway through my pregnancy (I am due at the end of April 2010) and it's been really good to get back to cooking and bento again. Here are a couple of them that made it to photos:

Chicken rice, cucumber slices, steamed chicken breast, char siew (Chinese bbq pork) and kai lan in oyster sauce.
091027

Tuna pasta salad with sundried tomatoes, sliced red peppers and hummus
091201

I am looking forward to getting back to more regular bento-making in the new year. I know that most people are probaly busy with holiday festivities now. Merry Christmas to you all and have a great new year ahead. Cheers to more bento ideas and may your Christmas stockings be filled with lots of bento kit and goodies!

[Bunny is | sleepy]

Before leaving Brooklyn I spent at least four hours scanning in like half of my sketchbook! I can't really show a lot of it publicly, but this is a huge chunk of it! Nothing's really quality, but there's a good quantity of it! That counts for something, right? 8D

Just to warn you fellas, the first few images are figure drawings with nudity and implied nudity. If that's not your thing, go ahead and skip to the next cut!

Here There Be Ladies )

... ... ...

Less Ladies Ahead! Mostly vague thumbnails, original characters, and a meme. )

... ... ...

That was fun! We should do it again next year.

Have a good one, guys!

I believe this is my... Eleventh bento?
Haven’t really been brining lunch to school recently ever since I discovered my school’s salad bar!

Photobucket

Top: Broccoli and leftover baked potato
Left: Honey turkey, lettuce and mayo on a whole wheat roll
Right: Pineapple Tidbits

With today being the last day of school before vacation, I don’t think I’ll be having any more bentos until the new year.
Happy holidays!!

This was a late-Hanukkah-or-early-Xmas-or-whatever present for [info]currentlee, whose cat's name is Prawn Salad.

I'm also knitting a shawl right now, so working on something tiiiiiny and relatively quick to complete was a fun diversion :)
